Desunir conjugation

Desunir conjugation - to separate

Table of Contents

Desunir is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to separate, disunite”.

Below are all of the conjugations for desunir in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Desunir Infinitive

English Infinitive to separate, disunite
Spanish Infinitive desunir

Desunir Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está desuniendo) and past continuous (estaba desuniendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. separating).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he desunido and hubiera desunido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have separated).

Gerundio / Gerund  desuniendo
Participio / Past Participle  desunido

Desunir Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Desunir Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I separate” or “they separate”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo desuno
desunes
Él / Ella / Usted desune
Nosotros / as desunimos
Vosotros / as desunís
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desunen
Vos desunís

Desunir Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I separated” or “she separated” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo desuní I separated
desuniste You separated
Él / Ella / Usted desunió He / she / you separated
Nosotros / as desunimos We separated
Vosotros / as desunisteis You separated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desunieron They / you separated
Vos desuniste You separated

Desunir Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was separating” or “she was separating” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo desunía I was separating
desunías You were separating
Él / Ella / Usted desunía He was / she was / you were separating
Nosotros / as desuníamos We were separating
Vosotros / as desuníais You were separating
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desunían They / you were separating
Vos desunías You were separating

Desunir Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have separated” and “she has separated”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he desunido I have separated
has desunido You have separated
Él / Ella / Usted ha desunido He has / she has / you have separated
Nosotros / as hemos desunido We have separated
Vosotros / as habéis desunido You have separated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han desunido They / you have separated
Vos has desunido You have separated

Desunir Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would separate” or “she would separate”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo desuniría I would separate
desunirías You would separate
Él / Ella / Usted desuniría He / she / you would separate
Nosotros / as desuniríamos We would separate
Vosotros / as desuniríais You would separate
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desunirían They / you would separate
Vos desunirías You would separate

Desunir Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will separate” or “they will separate”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a desunir” means “They are going to separate”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo desuniré I will separate
desunirás You will separate
Él / Ella / Usted desunirá He / she / you will separate
