Elogiar conjugation

Elogiar conjugation - to praise

Table of Contents

Elogiar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to praise”.

Below are all of the conjugations for elogiar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Elogiar Infinitive

English Infinitive to praise
Spanish Infinitive elogiar

Elogiar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está elogiando) and past continuous (estaba elogiando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. praising).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he elogiado and hubiera elogiado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have praised).

Gerundio / Gerund  elogiando
Participio / Past Participle  elogiado

Elogiar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Elogiar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I praise” or “they praise”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo elogio
elogias
Él / Ella / Usted elogia
Nosotros / as elogiamos
Vosotros / as elogiáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes elogian
Vos elogias

Elogiar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I praised” or “she praised” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo elogié I praised
elogiaste You praised
Él / Ella / Usted elogió He / she / you praised
Nosotros / as elogiamos We praised
Vosotros / as elogiasteis You praised
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes elogiaron They / you praised
Vos elogiaste You praised

Elogiar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was praising” or “she was praising” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo elogiaba I was praising
elogiabas You were praising
Él / Ella / Usted elogiaba He was / she was / you were praising
Nosotros / as elogiábamos We were praising
Vosotros / as elogiabais You were praising
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes elogiaban They / you were praising
Vos elogiabas You were praising

Elogiar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have praised” and “she has praised”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he elogiado I have praised

Él / Ella / Usted ha elogiado He has / she has / you have praised

Vosotros / as habéis elogiado You have praised
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han elogiado They / you have praised

Elogiar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would praise” or “she would praise”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Elogiar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will praise” or “they will praise”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a elogiar” means “They are going to praise”.
