Evitar conjugation

Evitar conjugation - to avoid

Table of Contents

Evitar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to avoid”.

Below are all of the conjugations for evitar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Evitar Infinitive

English Infinitive to avoid
Spanish Infinitive evitar

Evitar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está evitando) and past continuous (estaba evitando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. avoiding).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he evitado and hubiera evitado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have avoided).

Gerundio / Gerund  evitando
Participio / Past Participle  evitado

Evitar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Evitar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I avoid” or “they avoid”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo evito
evitas
Él / Ella / Usted evita
Nosotros / as evitamos
Vosotros / as evitáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes evitan
Vos evitás

Evitar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I avoided” or “she avoided” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo evité I avoided
evitaste You avoided
Él / Ella / Usted evitó He / she / you avoided
Nosotros / as evitamos We avoided
Vosotros / as evitasteis You avoided
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes evitaron They / you avoided
Vos evitaste You avoided

Evitar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was avoiding” or “she was avoiding” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo evitaba I was avoiding
evitabas You were avoiding
Él / Ella / Usted evitaba He was / she was / you were avoiding
Nosotros / as evitábamos We were avoiding
Vosotros / as evitabais You were avoiding
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes evitaban They / you were avoiding
Vos evitabas You were avoiding

Evitar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have avoided” and “she has avoided”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he evitado I have avoided
has evitado You have avoided
Él / Ella / Usted ha evitado He has / she has / you have avoided
Nosotros / as hemos evitado We have avoided
Vosotros / as habéis evitado You have avoided
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han evitado They / you have avoided
Vos has evitado You have avoided

Evitar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would avoid” or “she would avoid”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo evitaría I would avoid
evitarías You would avoid
Él / Ella / Usted evitaría He / she / you would avoid
Nosotros / as evitaríamos We would avoid
Vosotros / as evitaríais You would avoid

Evitar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will avoid” or “they will avoid”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a evitar” means “They are going to avoid”.

Yo evitaré I will avoid
evitarás You will avoid
Él / Ella / Usted evitará He / she / you will avoid
