Achicar conjugation

Achicar conjugation - to reduce

Table of Contents

Achicar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to reduce, lessen, shorten”.

Below are all of the conjugations for achicar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Achicar Infinitive

English Infinitive to reduce, lessen, shorten
Spanish Infinitive achicar

Achicar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está achicando) and past continuous (estaba achicando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. reducing).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he achicado and hubiera achicado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have reduced).

Gerundio / Gerund  achicando
Participio / Past Participle  achicado

Achicar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Achicar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I reduce” or “they reduce”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo achico
achicas
Él / Ella / Usted achica
Nosotros / as achicamos
Vosotros / as achicáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes achican
Vos achicás

Achicar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I reduced” or “she reduced” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo achiqué I reduced
achicaste You reduced
Él / Ella / Usted achicó He / she / you reduced
Nosotros / as achicamos We reduced
Vosotros / as achicasteis You reduced
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes achicaron They / you reduced
Vos achicaste You reduced

Achicar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was reducing” or “she was reducing” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo achicaba I was reducing
achicabas You were reducing

Nosotros / as achicábamos We were reducing
Vosotros / as achicabais You were reducing
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes achicaban They / you were reducing
Vos achicabas You were reducing

Achicar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have reduced” and “she has reduced”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he achicado I have reduced
has achicado You have reduced
Él / Ella / Usted ha achicado He has / she has / you have reduced
Nosotros / as hemos achicado We have reduced
Vosotros / as habéis achicado You have reduced
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han achicado They / you have reduced
Vos has achicado You have reduced

Achicar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would reduce” or “she would reduce”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo achicaría I would reduce
achicarías You would reduce
Él / Ella / Usted achicaría He / she / you would reduce
Nosotros / as achicaríamos We would reduce
Vosotros / as achicaríais You would reduce
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes achicarían They / you would reduce

Achicar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will reduce” or “they will reduce”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a achicar” means “They are going to reduce”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo achicaré I will reduce
achicarás You will reduce
Él / Ella / Usted achicará He / she / you will reduce
