Acordar conjugation

Acordar conjugation - to agree (upon)

Table of Contents

Acordar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to agree (upon)”.

Below are all of the conjugations for acordar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Acordar Infinitive

English Infinitive to agree (upon)
Spanish Infinitive acordar

Acordar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está acordando) and past continuous (estaba acordando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. agreeing upon).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he acordado and hubiera acordado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have agreed upon).

Gerundio / Gerund  acordando
Participio / Past Participle  acordado

Acordar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Acordar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I agree upon” or “they agree upon”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo acordo
acordas
Él / Ella / Usted acorda
Nosotros / as acordamos
Vosotros / as acordáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes acordan
Vos acordás

Acordar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I agreed upon” or “she agreed upon” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo acordé I agreed upon
acordaste You agreed upon
Él / Ella / Usted acordó He / she / you agreed upon
Nosotros / as acordamos We agreed upon
Vosotros / as acordasteis You agreed upon
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes acordaron They / you agreed upon
Vos acordaste You agreed upon

Acordar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was agreeing upon” or “she was agreeing upon” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo acordaba I was agreeing upon
acordabas You were agreeing upon
Él / Ella / Usted acordaba He was / she was / you were agreeing upon
Nosotros / as acordábamos We were agreeing upon
Vosotros / as acordabais You were agreeing upon
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes acordaban They / you were agreeing upon
Vos acordabas You were agreeing upon

Acordar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have agreed upon” and “she has agreed upon”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he acordado I have agreed upon
has acordado You have agreed upon
Él / Ella / Usted ha acordado He has / she has / you have agreed upon
Nosotros / as hemos acordado We have agreed upon
Vosotros / as habéis acordado You have agreed upon
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han acordado They / you have agreed upon
Vos has acordado You have agreed upon

Acordar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would agree upon” or “she would agree upon”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo acordaría I would agree upon
acordarías You would agree upon
Él / Ella / Usted acordaría He / she / you would agree upon
Nosotros / as acordaríamos We would agree upon
Vosotros / as acordaríais You would agree upon
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes acordarían They / you would agree upon
Vos acordarías You would agree upon

Acordar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will agree upon” or “they will agree upon”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a acordar” means “They are going to agree upon”.

acordarás You will agree upon
Él / Ella / Usted acordará He / she / you will agree upon
