Adobar conjugation

Adobar conjugation - to season

Table of Contents

Adobar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to season, flavor, marinate”.

Below are all of the conjugations for adobar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Adobar Infinitive

English Infinitive to season, flavor, marinate
Spanish Infinitive adobar

Adobar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está adobando) and past continuous (estaba adobando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. seasoning).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he adobado and hubiera adobado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have seasoned).

Gerundio / Gerund  adobando
Participio / Past Participle  adobado

Adobar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Adobar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I season” or “they season”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo adobo
adobas
Él / Ella / Usted adoba
Nosotros / as adobamos
Vosotros / as adobáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes adoban
Vos adoptás

Adobar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I seasoned” or “she seasoned” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo adobé I seasoned
adobaste You seasoned
Él / Ella / Usted adobó He / she / you seasoned
Nosotros / as adobamos We seasoned
Vosotros / as adobasteis You seasoned
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes adobaron They / you seasoned
Vos adobaste You seasoned

Adobar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was seasoning” or “she was seasoning” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo adobaba I was seasoning
adobabas You were seasoning
Él / Ella / Usted adobaba He was / she was / you were seasoning
Nosotros / as adobábamos We were seasoning
Vosotros / as adobabais You were seasoning
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes adobaban They / you were seasoning
Vos adobabas You were seasoning

Adobar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have seasoned” and “she has seasoned”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he adobado I have seasoned
has adobado You have seasoned
Él / Ella / Usted ha adobado He has / she has / you have seasoned
Nosotros / as hemos adobado We have seasoned
Vosotros / as habéis adobado You have seasoned
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han adobado They / you have seasoned
Vos has adobado You have seasoned

Adobar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would season” or “she would season”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo adobaría I would season
adobarías You would season
Él / Ella / Usted adobaría He / she / you would season
Nosotros / as adobaríamos We would season
Vosotros / as adobaríais You would season
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes adobarían They / you would season
Vos adobarías You would season

Adobar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will season” or “they will season”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a adobar” means “They are going to season”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo adobaré I will season
adobarás You will season
Él / Ella / Usted adobará He / she / you will season
Nosotros / as adobaremos We will season
Vosotros / as adobaréis You will season
