Apostar conjugation

Apostar conjugation - to bet

Table of Contents

Apostar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to bet, wager”.

Below are all of the conjugations for apostar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Apostar Infinitive

English Infinitive to bet, wager
Spanish Infinitive apostar

Apostar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está apostando) and past continuous (estaba apostando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. begging).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he apostado and hubiera apostado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have begged).

Gerundio / Gerund  apostando
Participio / Past Participle  apostado

Apostar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Apostar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I beg” or “they beg”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo aposto
apostas
Él / Ella / Usted aposta
Nosotros / as apostamos
Vosotros / as apostáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes apostan
Vos apostás

Apostar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I begged” or “she begged” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo aposté I begged
apostaste You begged
Él / Ella / Usted apostó He / she / you begged
Nosotros / as apostamos We begged
Vosotros / as apostasteis You begged
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes apostaron They / you begged
Vos apostaste You begged

Apostar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was begging” or “she was begging” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo apostaba I was begging
apostabas You were begging
Él / Ella / Usted apostaba He was / she was / you were begging
Nosotros / as apostábamos We were begging
Vosotros / as apostabais You were begging
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes apostaban They / you were begging
Vos apostabas You were begging

Apostar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have begged” and “she has begged”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he apostado I have begged
has apostado You have begged
Él / Ella / Usted ha apostado He has / she has / you have begged
Nosotros / as hemos apostado We have begged
Vosotros / as habéis apostado You have begged
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han apostado They / you have begged
Vos has apostado You have begged

Apostar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would beg” or “she would beg”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo apostaría I would beg
apostarías You would beg
Él / Ella / Usted apostaría He / she / you would beg
Nosotros / as apostaríamos We would beg
Vosotros / as apostaríais You would beg

Vos apostarías You would beg

Apostar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will beg” or “they will beg”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a apostar” means “They are going to beg”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo apostaré I will beg
apostarás You will beg
Él / Ella / Usted apostará He / she / you will beg
Nosotros / as apostaremos We will beg
