Barnizar conjugation

Barnizar conjugation - to varnish

Table of Contents

Barnizar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to varnish, lacquer”.

Below are all of the conjugations for barnizar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Barnizar Infinitive

English Infinitive to varnish, lacquer
Spanish Infinitive barnizar

Barnizar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está barnizando) and past continuous (estaba barnizando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. varnishing).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he barnizado and hubiera barnizado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have varnished).

Gerundio / Gerund  barnizando
Participio / Past Participle  barnizado

Barnizar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Barnizar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I varnish” or “they varnish”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo barnizo
barnizas
Él / Ella / Usted barniza
Nosotros / as barnizamos
Vosotros / as barnizáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes barnizan
Vos barnizás

Barnizar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I varnished” or “she varnished” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo barnicé I varnished
barnizaste You varnished
Él / Ella / Usted barnizó He / she / you varnished
Nosotros / as barnizamos We varnished
Vosotros / as barnizasteis You varnished
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes barnizaron They / you varnished
Vos barnizaste You varnished

Barnizar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was varnishing” or “she was varnishing” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo barnizaba I was varnishing
barnizabas You were varnishing
Él / Ella / Usted barnizaba He was / she was / you were varnishing
Nosotros / as barnizábamos We were varnishing
Vosotros / as barnizabais You were varnishing
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes barnizaban They / you were varnishing
Vos barnizabas You were varnishing

Barnizar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have varnished” and “she has varnished”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he barnizado I have varnished
has barnizado You have varnished
Él / Ella / Usted ha barnizado He has / she has / you have varnished
Nosotros / as hemos barnizado We have varnished
Vosotros / as habéis barnizado You have varnished
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han barnizado They / you have varnished
Vos has barnizado You have varnished

Barnizar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would varnish” or “she would varnish”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo barnizaría I would varnish
barnizarías You would varnish
Él / Ella / Usted barnizaría He / she / you would varnish
Nosotros / as barnizaríamos We would varnish
Vosotros / as barnizaríais You would varnish
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes barnizarían They / you would varnish

Barnizar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will varnish” or “they will varnish”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a barnizar” means “They are going to varnish”.
