Becar conjugation

Becar conjugation - to award or grant a scholarship or fellowship

Table of Contents

Becar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to award or grant a scholarship or fellowship”.

Below are all of the conjugations for becar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Becar Infinitive

English Infinitive to award or grant a scholarship or fellowship
Spanish Infinitive becar

Becar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está becando) and past continuous (estaba becando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. awarding a scholarship).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he becado and hubiera becado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have awarded a scholarship).

Gerundio / Gerund  becando
Participio / Past Participle  becado

Becar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Becar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I award a scholarship” or “they award a scholarship”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo beco
becas
Él / Ella / Usted beca
Nosotros / as becamos
Vosotros / as becáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes becan
Vos becás

Becar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I awarded a scholarship” or “she awarded a scholarship” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo bequé I awarded a scholarship
becaste You awarded a scholarship
Él / Ella / Usted becó He / she / you awarded a scholarship
Nosotros / as becamos We awarded a scholarship
Vosotros / as becasteis You awarded a scholarship
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes becaron They / you awarded a scholarship
Vos becaste You awarded a scholarship

Becar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was awarding a scholarship” or “she was awarding a scholarship” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo becaba I was awarding a scholarship
becabas You were awarding a scholarship
Él / Ella / Usted becaba He was / she was / you were awarding a scholarship
Nosotros / as becábamos We were awarding a scholarship
Vosotros / as becabais You were awarding a scholarship
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes becaban They / you were awarding a scholarship
Vos becabas You were awarding a scholarship

Becar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have awarded a scholarship” and “she has awarded a scholarship”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he becado I have awarded a scholarship
has becado You have awarded a scholarship
Él / Ella / Usted ha becado He has / she has / you have awarded a scholarship
Nosotros / as hemos becado We have awarded a scholarship
Vosotros / as habéis becado You have awarded a scholarship
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han becado They / you have awarded a scholarship
Vos has becado You have awarded a scholarship

Becar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would award a scholarship” or “she would award a scholarship”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo becaría I would award a scholarship
becarías You would award a scholarship

Nosotros / as becaríamos We would award a scholarship
Vosotros / as becaríais You would award a scholarship
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes becarían They / you would award a scholarship

Becar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will award a scholarship” or “they will award a scholarship”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a becar” means “They are going to award a scholarship”.

Yo becaré I will award a scholarship
