Ceder conjugation

Ceder conjugation - to cede

Table of Contents

Ceder is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to cede, yield, give in to, hand over”.

Below are all of the conjugations for ceder in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Ceder Infinitive

English Infinitive to cede, yield, give in to, hand over
Spanish Infinitive ceder

Ceder Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está cediendo) and past continuous (estaba cediendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. yielding).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he cedido and hubiera cedido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have yielded).

Gerundio / Gerund  cediendo
Participio / Past Participle  cedido

Ceder Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Ceder Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I yield” or “they yield”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo cedo
cedes
Él / Ella / Usted cede
Nosotros / as cedemos
Vosotros / as cedéis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes ceden
Vos cedés

Ceder Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I yielded” or “she yielded” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo cedí I yielded
cediste You yielded
Él / Ella / Usted cedió He / she / you yielded
Nosotros / as cedimos We yielded
Vosotros / as cedisteis You yielded
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes cedieron They / you yielded
Vos cediste You yielded

Ceder Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was yielding” or “she was yielding” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo cedía I was yielding
cedías You were yielding
Él / Ella / Usted cedía He was / she was / you were yielding
Nosotros / as cedíamos We were yielding
Vosotros / as cedíais You were yielding
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes cedían They / you were yielding
Vos cedías You were yielding

Ceder Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have yielded” and “she has yielded”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he cedido I have yielded
has cedido You have yielded
Él / Ella / Usted ha cedido He has / she has / you have yielded
Nosotros / as hemos cedido We have yielded
Vosotros / as habéis cedido You have yielded
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han cedido They / you have yielded
Vos has cedido You have yielded

Ceder Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would yield” or “she would yield”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo cedería I would yield
cederías You would yield
Él / Ella / Usted cedería He / she / you would yield
Nosotros / as cederíamos We would yield
Vosotros / as cederíais You would yield

Vos cederías You would yield

Ceder Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will yield” or “they will yield”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a ceder” means “They are going to yield”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo cederé I will yield
cederás You will yield
Él / Ella / Usted cederá He / she / you will yield
Nosotros / as cederemos We will yield
