Convalecer conjugation

Convalecer conjugation - to recover

Table of Contents

Convalecer is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to recover, convalesce”.

Below are all of the conjugations for convalecer in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Convalecer Infinitive

English Infinitive to recover, convalesce
Spanish Infinitive convalecer

Convalecer Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está convaleciendo) and past continuous (estaba convaleciendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. recovering).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he convalecido and hubiera convalecido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have recovered).

Gerundio / Gerund  convaleciendo
Participio / Past Participle  convalecido

Convalecer Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Convalecer Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I recover” or “they recover”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo convalezco
convaleces
Él / Ella / Usted convalece
Nosotros / as convalecemos
Vosotros / as convalecéis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes convalecen
Vos convalecés

Convalecer Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I recovered” or “she recovered” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo convalecí I recovered
convaleciste You recovered
Él / Ella / Usted convaleció He / she / you recovered
Nosotros / as convalecimos We recovered
Vosotros / as convalecisteis You recovered
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes convalecieron They / you recovered
Vos convaleciste You recovered

Convalecer Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was recovering” or “she was recovering” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo convalecía I was recovering
convalecías You were recovering
Él / Ella / Usted convalecía He was / she was / you were recovering
Nosotros / as convalecíamos We were recovering
Vosotros / as convalecíais You were recovering
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes convalecían They / you were recovering
Vos convalecías You were recovering

Convalecer Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have recovered” and “she has recovered”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he convalecido I have recovered
has convalecido You have recovered
Él / Ella / Usted ha convalecido He has / she has / you have recovered
Nosotros / as hemos convalecido We have recovered
Vosotros / as habéis convalecido You have recovered
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han convalecido They / you have recovered

Convalecer Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would recover” or “she would recover”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo convalecería I would recover
convalecerías You would recover
Él / Ella / Usted convalecería He / she / you would recover
Nosotros / as convaleceríamos We would recover
Vosotros / as convaleceríais You would recover

Convalecer Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will recover” or “they will recover”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a convalecer” means “They are going to recover”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo convaleceré I will recover
convalecerás You will recover
Él / Ella / Usted convalecerá He / she / you will recover
