Dedicarse conjugation

Dedicarse conjugation - to devote oneself to

Table of Contents

Dedicarse is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to devote oneself to”.

It’s a reflexive verb, which means the subject performs the action upon themselves – e.g. “I wake myself”.

Reflexive verbs always carry a reflexive pronoun – me, te, se, nos or os – which is often placed before the conjugated verb (e.g. me dedico) or after the infinitive (e.g. Él tiene que dedicarse).

Below are all of the conjugations for dedicarse in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Dedicarse Infinitive

English Infinitive to devote oneself to
Spanish Infinitive dedicarse

Dedicarse Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está dedicándose) and past continuous (estaba dedicándose). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. devoting myself to).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he dedicado and hubiera dedicado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have devoted myself to).

Gerundio / Gerund  dedicándose
Participio / Past Participle  dedicado

Dedicarse Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Dedicarse Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I devote myself to” or “they devote myself to”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo me dedico
te dedicas
Él / Ella / Usted se dedica
Nosotros / as nos dedicamos
Vosotros / as os dedicáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se dedican
Vos te dedicás

Dedicarse Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I devoted myself to” or “she devoted myself to” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me dediqué I devoted myself to
te dedicaste You devoted myself to
Él / Ella / Usted se dedicó He / she / you devoted myself to
Nosotros / as nos dedicamos We devoted myself to
Vosotros / as os dedicasteis You devoted myself to
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se dedicaron They / you devoted myself to
Vos te dedicaste You devoted myself to

Dedicarse Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was devoting myself to” or “she was devoting myself to” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me dedicaba I was devoting myself to
te dedicabas You were devoting myself to
Él / Ella / Usted se dedicaba He was / she was / you were devoting myself to
Nosotros / as nos dedicábamos We were devoting myself to
Vosotros / as os dedicabais You were devoting myself to
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se dedicaban They / you were devoting myself to
Vos te dedicabas You were devoting myself to

Dedicarse Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have devoted myself to” and “she has devoted myself to”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me he dedicado I have devoted myself to
te has dedicado You have devoted myself to
Él / Ella / Usted se ha dedicado He has / she has / you have devoted myself to
Nosotros / as nos hemos dedicado We have devoted myself to
Vosotros / as os habéis dedicado You have devoted myself to
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se han dedicado They / you have devoted myself to
Vos te has dedicado You have devoted myself to

Dedicarse Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would devote oneself to” or “she would devote oneself to”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo me dedicaría I would devote myself to
te dedicarías You would devote myself to
Él / Ella / Usted se dedicaría He / she / you would devote myself to
Nosotros / as nos dedicaríamos We would devote myself to
Vosotros / as os dedicaríais You would devote myself to
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se dedicarían They / you would devote myself to
Vos te dedicarías You would devote myself to

Dedicarse Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will devote oneself to” or “they will devote oneself to”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a dedicarse” means “They are going to devote oneself to”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me dedicaré I will devote myself to
te dedicarás You will devote myself to
Él / Ella / Usted se dedicará He / she / you will devote myself to
