Deslizarse conjugation

Deslizarse conjugation - to slide

Table of Contents

Deslizarse is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to slide, let slip”.

It’s a reflexive verb, which means the subject performs the action upon themselves – e.g. “I wake myself”.

Reflexive verbs always carry a reflexive pronoun – me, te, se, nos or os – which is often placed before the conjugated verb (e.g. me deslizo) or after the infinitive (e.g. Él tiene que deslizarse).

Below are all of the conjugations for deslizarse in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Deslizarse Infinitive

English Infinitive to slide, let slip
Spanish Infinitive deslizarse

Deslizarse Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está deslizándose) and past continuous (estaba deslizándose). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. sliding).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he deslizado and hubiera deslizado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have slid).

Gerundio / Gerund  deslizándose
Participio / Past Participle  deslizado

Deslizarse Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Deslizarse Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I slide” or “they slide”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo me deslizo
te deslizas
Él / Ella / Usted se desliza
Nosotros / as nos deslizamos
Vosotros / as os deslizáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se deslizan
Vos te deslizás

Deslizarse Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I slid” or “she slid” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me deslicé I slid
te deslizaste You slid
Él / Ella / Usted se deslizó He / she / you slid
Nosotros / as nos deslizamos We slid
Vosotros / as os deslizasteis You slid
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se deslizaron They / you slid
Vos te deslizaste You slid

Deslizarse Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was sliding” or “she was sliding” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me deslizaba I was sliding

Nosotros / as nos deslizábamos We were sliding
Vosotros / as os deslizabais You were sliding

Deslizarse Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have slid” and “she has slid”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo me he deslizado I have slid

Él / Ella / Usted se ha deslizado He has / she has / you have slid

Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes se han deslizado They / you have slid

Deslizarse Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would slide” or “she would slide”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo me deslizaría I would slide
te deslizarías You would slide

Deslizarse Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will slide” or “they will slide”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a deslizarse” means “They are going to slide”.

te deslizarás You will slide
Él / Ella / Usted se deslizará He / she / you will slide
