Detonar conjugation

Detonar conjugation - to detonate

Table of Contents

Detonar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to detonate, explode”.

Below are all of the conjugations for detonar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Detonar Infinitive

English Infinitive to detonate, explode
Spanish Infinitive detonar

Detonar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está detonando) and past continuous (estaba detonando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. detonating).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he detonado and hubiera detonado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have detonated).

Gerundio / Gerund  detonando
Participio / Past Participle  detonado

Detonar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Detonar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I detonate” or “they detonate”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo detono
detonas
Él / Ella / Usted detona
Nosotros / as detonamos
Vosotros / as detonáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes detonan
Vos detonás

Detonar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I detonated” or “she detonated” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo detoné I detonated
detonaste You detonated
Él / Ella / Usted detonó He / she / you detonated
Nosotros / as detonamos We detonated
Vosotros / as detonasteis You detonated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes detonaron They / you detonated
Vos detonaste You detonated

Detonar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was detonating” or “she was detonating” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo detonaba I was detonating
detonabas You were detonating

Nosotros / as detonábamos We were detonating
Vosotros / as detonabais You were detonating
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes detonaban They / you were detonating

Detonar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have detonated” and “she has detonated”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he detonado I have detonated
has detonado You have detonated
Él / Ella / Usted ha detonado He has / she has / you have detonated
Nosotros / as hemos detonado We have detonated
Vosotros / as habéis detonado You have detonated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han detonado They / you have detonated
Vos has detonado You have detonated

Detonar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would detonate” or “she would detonate”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo detonaría I would detonate
detonarías You would detonate

Detonar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will detonate” or “they will detonate”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a detonar” means “They are going to detonate”.

detonarás You will detonate
Él / Ella / Usted detonará He / she / you will detonate

There is no difference between these two forms, and Spanish speakers use them interchangeably.
