Ignorar conjugation

Table of Contents

Ignorar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to be ignorant of, unaware of, not to know”.

Below are all of the conjugations for ignorar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Ignorar Infinitive

English Infinitive to be ignorant of, unaware of, not to know
Spanish Infinitive ignorar

Ignorar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está ignorando) and past continuous (estaba ignorando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. was ignorant of).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he been ignorant of and hubiera been ignorant of. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have being ignorant of).

Gerundio / Gerund  ignorando
Participio / Past Participle  been ignorant of

Ignorar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Ignorar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I be ignorant of” or “they be ignorant of”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo ignoro
ignoras
Él / Ella / Usted ignora
Nosotros / as ignoramos
Vosotros / as ignoráis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes ignoran
Vos ignorás

Ignorar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I be ignorant of” or “she be ignorant of” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo ignoré I be ignorant of
ignoraste You be ignorant of
Él / Ella / Usted ignoró He / she / you be ignorant of
Nosotros / as ignoramos We be ignorant of
Vosotros / as ignorasteis You be ignorant of
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes ignoraron They / you be ignorant of
Vos ignoraste You be ignorant of

Ignorar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was was ignorant of” or “she was was ignorant of” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo ignoraba I was was ignorant of

Él / Ella / Usted ignoraba He was / she was / you were was ignorant of
Nosotros / as ignorábamos We were was ignorant of
Vosotros / as ignorabais You were was ignorant of
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes ignoraban They / you were was ignorant of
Vos ignorabas You were was ignorant of

Ignorar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have being ignorant of” and “she has being ignorant of”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he been ignorant of I have being ignorant of
has been ignorant of You have being ignorant of
Él / Ella / Usted ha been ignorant of He has / she has / you have being ignorant of
Nosotros / as hemos been ignorant of We have being ignorant of
Vosotros / as habéis been ignorant of You have being ignorant of

Ignorar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would be ignorant of” or “she would be ignorant of”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo ignoraría I would be ignorant of
ignorarías You would be ignorant of

Nosotros / as ignoraríamos We would be ignorant of
Vosotros / as ignoraríais You would be ignorant of
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes ignorarían They / you would be ignorant of

Ignorar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will be ignorant of” or “they will be ignorant of”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a ignorar” means “They are going to be ignorant of”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo ignoraré I will be ignorant of
ignorarás You will be ignorant of
Él / Ella / Usted ignorará He / she / you will be ignorant of
