Insinuar conjugation

Table of Contents

Insinuar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to insinuate, suggest, hint”.

Below are all of the conjugations for insinuar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Insinuar Infinitive

English Infinitive to insinuate, suggest, hint
Spanish Infinitive insinuar

Insinuar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está insinuando) and past continuous (estaba insinuando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. insinuating).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he insinuado and hubiera insinuado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have insinuated).

Gerundio / Gerund  insinuando
Participio / Past Participle  insinuado

Insinuar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Insinuar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I insinuate” or “they insinuate”.

Yo insinúo
insinúas
Él / Ella / Usted insinúa
Nosotros / as insinuamos
Vosotros / as insinuáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes insinúan
Vos insinuás

Insinuar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I insinuated” or “she insinuated” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo insinué I insinuated
insinuaste You insinuated
Él / Ella / Usted insinuó He / she / you insinuated
Nosotros / as insinuamos We insinuated
Vosotros / as insinuasteis You insinuated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes insinuaron They / you insinuated
Vos insinuaste You insinuated

Insinuar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was insinuating” or “she was insinuating” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo insinuaba I was insinuating
insinuabas You were insinuating
Él / Ella / Usted insinuaba He was / she was / you were insinuating
Nosotros / as insinuábamos We were insinuating
Vosotros / as insinuabais You were insinuating
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes insinuaban They / you were insinuating
Vos insinuabas You were insinuating

Insinuar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have insinuated” and “she has insinuated”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he insinuado I have insinuated
has insinuado You have insinuated
Él / Ella / Usted ha insinuado He has / she has / you have insinuated
Nosotros / as hemos insinuado We have insinuated
Vosotros / as habéis insinuado You have insinuated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han insinuado They / you have insinuated

Insinuar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would insinuate” or “she would insinuate”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo insinuaría I would insinuate
insinuarías You would insinuate
Él / Ella / Usted insinuaría He / she / you would insinuate

Insinuar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will insinuate” or “they will insinuate”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a insinuar” means “They are going to insinuate”.

Yo insinuaré I will insinuate
insinuarás You will insinuate
Él / Ella / Usted insinuará He / she / you will insinuate
