Navegar conjugation

Table of Contents

Navegar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to navigate, sail”.

Below are all of the conjugations for navegar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Navegar Infinitive

English Infinitive to navigate, sail
Spanish Infinitive navegar

Navegar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está navegando) and past continuous (estaba navegando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. navigating).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he navegado and hubiera navegado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have navigated).

Gerundio / Gerund  navegando
Participio / Past Participle  navegado

Navegar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Navegar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I navigate” or “they navigate”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo navego
navegas
Él / Ella / Usted navega
Nosotros / as navegamos
Vosotros / as navegáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes navegan
Vos

Navegar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I navigated” or “she navigated” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo navegué I navigated
navegaste You navigated
Él / Ella / Usted navegó He / she / you navigated
Nosotros / as navegamos We navigated
Vosotros / as navegasteis You navigated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes navegaron They / you navigated
Vos navegaste You navigated

Navegar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was navigating” or “she was navigating” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo navegaba I was navigating
navegabas You were navigating
Él / Ella / Usted navegaba He was / she was / you were navigating
Nosotros / as navegábamos We were navigating
Vosotros / as navegabais You were navigating
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes navegaban They / you were navigating
Vos navegabas You were navigating

Navegar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have navigated” and “she has navigated”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he navegado I have navigated
has navegado You have navigated
Él / Ella / Usted ha navegado He has / she has / you have navigated
Nosotros / as hemos navegado We have navigated
Vosotros / as habéis navegado You have navigated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han navegado They / you have navigated

Navegar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would navigate” or “she would navigate”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

navegarías You would navigate
Él / Ella / Usted navegaría He / she / you would navigate
Nosotros / as navegaríamos We would navigate

Navegar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will navigate” or “they will navigate”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a navegar” means “They are going to navigate”.
