Negociar conjugation

Table of Contents

Negociar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to negotiate”.

Below are all of the conjugations for negociar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Negociar Infinitive

English Infinitive to negotiate
Spanish Infinitive negociar

Negociar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está negociando) and past continuous (estaba negociando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. negotiating).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he negociado and hubiera negociado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have negotiated).

Gerundio / Gerund  negociando
Participio / Past Participle  negociado

Negociar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Negociar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I negotiate” or “they negotiate”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo negocio
negocias
Él / Ella / Usted negocia
Nosotros / as negociamos
Vosotros / as negociáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes negocian
Vos

Negociar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I negotiated” or “she negotiated” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo negocié I negotiated
negociaste You negotiated
Él / Ella / Usted negoció He / she / you negotiated
Nosotros / as negociamos We negotiated
Vosotros / as negociasteis You negotiated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes negociaron They / you negotiated
Vos negociaste You negotiated

Negociar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was negotiating” or “she was negotiating” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo negociaba I was negotiating
negociabas You were negotiating
Él / Ella / Usted negociaba He was / she was / you were negotiating
Nosotros / as negociábamos We were negotiating
Vosotros / as negociabais You were negotiating
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes negociaban They / you were negotiating
Vos negociabas You were negotiating

Negociar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have negotiated” and “she has negotiated”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he negociado I have negotiated
has negociado You have negotiated
Él / Ella / Usted ha negociado He has / she has / you have negotiated
Nosotros / as hemos negociado We have negotiated
Vosotros / as habéis negociado You have negotiated
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han negociado They / you have negotiated
Vos has negociado You have negotiated

Negociar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would negotiate” or “she would negotiate”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo negociaría I would negotiate
negociarías You would negotiate
Él / Ella / Usted negociaría He / she / you would negotiate
Nosotros / as negociaríamos We would negotiate
Vosotros / as negociaríais You would negotiate
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes negociarían They / you would negotiate
Vos negociarías You would negotiate

Negociar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will negotiate” or “they will negotiate”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a negociar” means “They are going to negotiate”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo negociaré I will negotiate
negociarás You will negotiate
Él / Ella / Usted negociará He / she / you will negotiate
Nosotros / as negociaremos We will negotiate
