Quedar conjugation

Quedar conjugation - to remain / to meet

Table of Contents

Quedar is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to remain / to meet”.

Below are all of the conjugations for quedar in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Quedar Infinitive

English Infinitive to remain / to meet
Spanish Infinitive quedar

Quedar Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está quedando) and past continuous (estaba quedando). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. remaining).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he quedado and hubiera quedado. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have remained).

Gerundio / Gerund  quedando
Participio / Past Participle  quedado

Quedar Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Quedar Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I remain” or “they remain”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo quedo
quedas
Él / Ella / Usted queda
Nosotros / as quedamos
Vosotros / as quedáis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes quedan
Vos quedás

Quedar Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I remained” or “she remained” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo quedé I remained
quedaste You remained
Él / Ella / Usted quedó He / she / you remained
Nosotros / as quedamos We remained
Vosotros / as quedasteis You remained
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes quedaron They / you remained
Vos quedaste You remained

Quedar Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was remaining” or “she was remaining” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo quedaba I was remaining
quedabas You were remaining
Él / Ella / Usted quedaba He was / she was / you were remaining
Nosotros / as quedábamos We were remaining
Vosotros / as quedabais You were remaining
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes quedaban They / you were remaining

Quedar Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have remained” and “she has remained”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he quedado I have remained
has quedado You have remained
Él / Ella / Usted ha quedado He has / she has / you have remained
Nosotros / as hemos quedado We have remained
Vosotros / as habéis quedado You have remained
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han quedado They / you have remained
Vos has quedado You have remained

Quedar Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would remain” or “she would remain”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Yo quedaría I would remain
quedarías You would remain
Él / Ella / Usted quedaría He / she / you would remain
Nosotros / as quedaríamos We would remain

Quedar Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will remain” or “they will remain”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a quedar” means “They are going to remain”.
